Well,
I have been thinking about writing about this book for a quite long time. I had read article an article by Khushwant Singh during my college days as a part of syllabus. He does not need any introduction and a well known author and celebrity. Except his article as a part of curriculum, I had not read his any writing. Suddenly, news of his sad demise came and immediately as a tribute to this great author and a statesman, read.com allowed to download his book In the company of women.
I picked it up and listened it. Carefully, one by one, every chapter and every incident.
Well, no doubt Mr. Khushwant Singh is a good narrator and a person with good creative mind. When you read the book/ listen the book you can visualise every incident before you. It brings our imagination and fantasies outside.
This book is a kind of soft porn. I cannot say what had been the intention of the author. Whether he wanted to make the book interesting so the reader could imagine / visualize all the situation and incident and enjoy it or whether the author wanted to make the book commercially viable same as our Bollywood movies who do not want to go away without a bed room, sex and explicit scenes.
The book is about its protagonist Mohan Kumar. An intelligent lower middle class boy who went to US for higher studies where he gets acquainted to their open culture sex and encounter sex with his classmate who is interested to see his long penis size. He lists his virginity to her in a physical encounter. He assumed that was a bond but her that one night stand Jessica Browne makes him clear that she is not at all interested in a permanent relationship. Then he meet a Pakistani diplomats wife Yasmin who is much elder to him and who is a kind of staunch islamist and an Orthodox woman. Still she leaves everything and do physical encounter with him. Somewhere it seems that the author has tried to describe that however religious strict you are, when you have urge for sex and physical relationship, nothing stands. The story moves forward. Mohan Kumar returns to India and meet his very respected, spiritual and a staunch Aryasamaji father who is more worried to know whether is son has eaten pork or beef.
Mohan Kumar has I immense respect for his father. He obey him and respect him the whole life. His father search a life partner for him. His father is more interested for a well to do respectful family for his son who has been graduated from a ivy league university whereas Mohan Kumar is more interested for a woman with good breast and figure to satisfy his sexual need and he finally gets married to a very reach girl. The description of honeymoon scene at Shivalik is enough to arouse our feeling and sexual desire. However things do not go well. His wife gets sick due to climate change , her wife's family blame for his carelessness and relationship goes bitter. The story indicates that the relationship between them was not good from the beginning as it was more based on gaining material things than the soul matching. Soon, they have 2 children and his wife takes least interest in sex. She also dislikes Mohan's father and insults him more often and finally Mohan's father decides to go to an Ashram in Haridwar. This add more bitterness in their relationships. Slowly, he lose interest in his wife and his wife also lose interest in him and also in sexual desires.
Finally he decides to find sexual adventure outside starting with Marry Gomes a nurse for his wife. After that , after separation from his wife, he had sexual encounter with many women and finally he gets infected with AIDS and die.
Writing style : as I mentioned earlier , in the beginning of the review, the book is a kind of soft porn and this is done possibly to make it a commercially viable. The book describes every physical and sexual act of Mohan Kumar with multiple women. When you read the incident it definitely arouses your feeling and desire and won't surprise if you reach to orgasm through these feelings. Author describes well the gap between an eastern culture and western culture. Each chapter of the boom is well written, well described and each character captures images of every single character. The author has given enough clarity to each character. It engage the readers well. Initislly it gives impression that its a real biography and not a fiction. Initially you may feel that the life of Mohan Kumar worth to be lived and author is promoting that but the death of him turns us to spirituality.
