Universities offering distance learning courses in India- Maharashtra

Hi Friends,
This is the first part in the series. After seeing so much scam and wrongdoings of the private universities like CMJ, MGU, EIILM, Jaipur National, Sikkim Manipal University and non university institutes like SCDL, Welingkar, NMIMS, I felt I should write about the state/ central and approved universities offering distance learning courses in India under different series. This is the first series of the post about distance learning institutes in Maharashtra. It provides information on name of the institutes, type of the institute- central university, state university or deemed university, courses on offer, whether distance / correspondence mode (with study material) or in external mode (no study materials), exam centres available and usual time of admission. In case if you have any query, please revert:

These are the list of universities. I feel, In Maharashtra enough distance learning institutes, courses are available so why somebody need to buy degree from these private universities? If these institute correct and improve their course materials, advertise it well and if provide enough information, people can choose right course and institute. Look at master of real estate valuation course of Shivaji University- something interesting and valuable. there are many such.

Apart from the above universities, following institutes also offer courses through distance mode which are approved by DEC but since they are not a university (central/ state/ deemed or private) their courses are neither valid for higher studies nor holds that much value (specially SCDL, BIMM, MIT who are selling these certificates and providing no education at all).

I hope this information is useful for you. Please post your comments and queries and I will surely respond subject to my available schedule. My next post will be on Universities in Tamil Nadu offering distance learning courses.

  6. Hello Govind, I have been following your blogs since some time and I really appreciate your work.
I want your help/advice. I had my BCA from Dr.Ram Manohar Lohiya Awadh University (2006 passout) and been working since. Over the years, my job role have shifted to more of IT infra instead of programming. I currently stay in Mumbai and work for a french MNC on a microsoft platform. I am interested to do PG degree - I am more keen on Msc IT or CS instead of MCA as MSc IT would be more helpful for my job role i guess and I can complete it in 2 years (MCA is 3 years). I dont want to do any MBA/PGDBM yet. I have looked few state universities offering distance Msc . Unfortunately , mumbai university doesnt offer MSCIT for BCA but some do offer MScIT for BCA (Annamalai university). I am bit confused on what to do, Can you please help?

    1. Hi,
Thanks a lot for your appreciation
University of Mumbai offers M.Sc. IT as well as M.Sc Computer science. Although BCA is not specifically mentioned as a criteria however BCA is treated equivalent as B.Sc. IT and B.Sc. Computer Science
Only condition is: You should have studied mathematics as one of the subject in BCA
You need apply for eligibility also so you can pursue
You may opt University of Madras or Bharati Vidyapeeth Alternatively both have exam centres at Mumbai

Bharti is also a good option you may choose it.
If you want to pursue career in management like such as project manager, team leader, system admin, system manager, IT manager you should think about MBA IT but if you want to progress career in IT then please stick to M.Sc. IT, M.Sc. CS or MCA

  7. Hello Govind, thanks you very much for the blog. Its very helpful. My question- You have mentioned that Mumbai university provided some courses (like MSc IT etc) without approval of DEC. What Impact is this going to have if we opt for such courses ? Is this safe to enroll for these courses from Mumbai University IDOL ? Thanks.

    1. 1. In corporate it will be widely accepted but you may not be able to pursue career in public sector
      2. You may be allowed to do higher studies from the same university (i.e. Mumbai) and from other global universities but Indian universities may not accept as they might ask for DEC approval.

You may take your decision. I recommend to enroll

  8. Hi Gobind,
I am working full time in Mumbai and plan to do an MA in Economics from Open/Distance learning. My main requirement is to get a Masters degree with 50% (besides a new found interest in Finance) while maintaining my job.
    The options I considered are:
    - Annamalai - Easy possibly but no centre in Mumbai for exams.
    - Delhi University - May need to travel for exams
    - IGNOU - Frequent assignments etc - cant devote time all round the year
    - Mumbai University IDOL - Exams are difficult? (from your blog)

Can you let me know the best University for my requirements in terms of a) convenience (centre in Mumbai) and b) Exams not too difficult so i can also continue my job?

On a different note, I admire your zeal in bringing probity and accountability to higher education. My salute to you.

  11. Hi Govind, Found your blog very useful & informative. I stay at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai & had almost made my mind ITM's 2year Executive MBA program. But after analysing the info given in ur blog, I put it on hold. I am having 9 yrs of exp as an electrical design engineer & currently working as a team lead with very good MNC in Thane. Institutes suggested by you i.e. JBIM, KJ summaya, ADMI, Walinker, etc are really good but attending the evening classes at those institutes will not be possible for me given my location (office@thane & home@kharghar). Could you pls suggest me any good part time MBA in Thane or in Navi Mumbai, except ITM? I also heard about IIM- Indore 2 year PGPMX at CBD Belapur. What is your opinion on this?

  12. Hello Sir,
I had completed my 10th and 3 Year full time diploma in Computer Technology from Mumbai (Department of technical Education). Because of some financial & family reason, I had unable to continue my education. After diploma result immediately I got job in IT firm. Now I have around 18 year experience. In between I tried to complete my graduation from IGNOU BCA. But that also not completed. So finally I completed same BCA graduation from YCMOU ( Year 2013 to 2015) and waiting for final marksheet & certificate.
In current organization my job is like management staff (Like Manager). So I need some kind of certification or master in business management in IT or similar field. So I am searching genuine distance education institute or university within or near to mumbai. Because i can't leave or shift the job. I sorted Bharati Vidyapeeth Distance Education, YCMOU and IGNOU . But both YCMOU and IGNOU does not provide MBA in IT related field.

So request you please guid me and suggest any way to complete MBA from genuine distance education institute or university

    Thaks for kind Help,
    Prashant

Just came across your blog. Great Work and Effort.. Keep It Up.

Need some advice I would like to do my MBA online from Dubai or DO my assessments from Dubai and for Exams come to India as I work in Dubai.

My options are Anamalia, Bharatiar University. As I have a busy schedule and travel most of the time . I am looking for a much practical assessment / multiple choice program.

    1)Which one would you suggest?
    2) Which MBA degree would have a better global or international value if I need to do a Executive Leadership Course from a USA University
    3) Which would give me both UGC, HRD attestation to be able to take up govt jobs in India
    4) Which would be good to use for migration to US or Canada.

Would appreciate your quick response as time is running out for me to enroll.
