Career question- What after LLB for entry into an MNC

Question:
Hello,
i m XXX persuing law course from university of mumbai....shd i do mba or llm which wd b beneficial for a job in mnc as legal advisor

Answer
Hi XXX,
If you are preferring job in MNC, first of all choose which sector you want to opt. Like
Litigation or non litigation?
Once you decide it then decide
Civil or criminal
once you decide on this too then decide your specialisation
Media law
Property Law
Companies law
Intellectual Properties Rights - Copy Right, Patents, Trademark etc.

You must start your career right now. In an MNC few factors are most important
1. How much you are updating yourself with the current business and political affairs
2. How strong you are in your drafting skills (readymade format does not work)
3. What is your prior experience in this including experience the specific Acts/ Laws

Unfortunately our LLB and LLM (Specially University of Mumbai) education are too much focused on theory, general thing and do not create a good lawyer so doin LLM does not help.

If you are preferring career in companies law like Companies Act and other mercantile Act, prefer to pursue course in Company Secretaryship.
Alongwith this, join a law firm which has good reputation (right now- as a trainee) and which specialize in the field of your choice and gain the experience.
No need to do MBA as MBA is not a criteria for entry into corporate world and LLM, corporate really do not believe on this qualification.

Shall you need any further info, please revert.

  2. Hi
First of all, start a career under a good law firm. It will help you to understand their strategy. You will get lot of work load, also lot of clients too. Slowly you can build your network and grow your knowledge. This will really help.
